COVID-19 Testing Information

There are two main types of test for COVID-19, diagnostic tests and antibody tests.

Diagnostic tests can show if someone has an active coronavirus infection and should take steps to quarantine or isolate themselves from others. Diagnostic testing is best suited during the acute phase of COVID-19 (between days 0-14). Currently there are two types of diagnostic tests which can detect the virus – molecular tests, such as RT-PCR tests, that detect the virus’s genetic material, and antigen tests that detect specific proteins on the surface of the virus.

Antibody tests look for antibodies (IgA, IgM and IgG) that are made by your immune system in response to a threat, such as a specific virus. Antibody testing is best suited during the recovery phase (from day 14+). They can help fight infections and can take several days or weeks to develop after an infection and may stay in the blood for several weeks or more after recovery. Because of this, our antibody tests are not used to diagnose an active coronavirus infection.
